Home security tips for an older property

Home security tips for an older property

    securing an older property

When installing additional security in a period property, there is always a tension between making it more secure vis-à-vis retaining the charm and integrity of the building. So we’ve put together a few ideas to help you:

    First and foremost

There’s no point installing additional security measures if your doors and windows are in poor repair, so before you do anything else, check the external wood work on your property is in good condition. There is no point adding additional locks to a door if a burglar could simply break down a weak panel for example, so keep your seasonal maintenance up to date.

    Windows can work for you

Window locks work wonders in terms of improving the security of properties, especially if they are older and are fitted with sash windows for example. They’ll make it more difficult for someone to break into your home, but they’ll achieve this without being too obtrusive or spoiling the period character of your property.

When it comes to your glazing, laminated glass can prove more robust than more traditional sorts, but remember it could change the appearance of your home, so tread carefully in this regard – especially if your home is listed.

In addition, some period properties already have, or would have had, wooden shutters that could be barred at night – so consider reinstalling these if they are well-suited to your property. Not only will they improve security, but they’ll add an eye catching feature to your reception rooms too.

    Doors dilemmas

Look to your door locks and see if they are in need of improvement, also check with your insurance company before you install new ones, as they may specify a particular type or standard – a five-lever mortice deadlock that meets the BS3621 standard is often required. In addition to mortice locks, consider adding a nightlatch and a letter box cage, so no one can use your letter box to access the door locks.

    The back matters

When looking at the locks on your house, whether on the doors or windows, don’t neglect the back of your house, even if you think that access is difficult. Don’t make the mistake of giving your front door a lot of attention but forgetting the back door or your pantry window for example – it’s a common mistake to make. Ensure all points of entry are secured.

    Metal matters

Just as historic churches have had a problem with metal thefts, so too have owners of older homes, so if your property has period features including lead, copper and other metals, be mindful of their attraction to burglars. Lights and alarms operated by sensors could do the trick, and you may be able to utilise security markings too.

Whatever the security measures you are considering, remember, if your property is listed or in a conservation area there may be restrictions on the security measures you can install, especially if they affect the appearance of the building or impact on an original feature, so always seek advice before you proceed.
